Dear CW Family,
By now you have likely begun to hear news concerning accusations and charges that have been made toward former Associate Pastor and Director of the Colonial Woods Christian Counseling Center, Jack Woodburn.
Our hearts are devastate by the news. First for those who may have been victimized and secondly for those who have been a part of our Colonial Woods family.
Information first came to our attention via a news posting through Channel 4 in Detroit on Wednesday May 9th indicating that Jack was being charged with participating and soliciting child pornography. The nature of the allegations is unimaginable.
We met with our church staff and leadership as well as the Counseling Center staff. Our denominational leadership has been made fully aware as well. We also held an open meeting with adults in attendance at our Wednesday evening service where we shared the initial information and spent time in groups for prayer. I also felt it was important to meet with our Senior High students and address this with them as well as answer any questions I could. We are now reaching out to you as our church family.
I want to assure you that we desire to be as open and transparent as we possibly can with you as a church family and with our community. We recognize that this impacts far more than a local church body. While we have not been contacted by any law enforcement agencies regarding this investigation, we are open and will be cooperative in any way possible. Our desire is simply that truth would prevail, and justice would be served.
We communicated to the church family earlier this year that Jack had stepped into retirement. As such, he has not served in any capacity with Colonial Woods or the Counseling Center since late February. At this time, law enforcement has indicated that this has been internet based and the information that we have is that none of the allegations have suggested that any of the charges are related to Jack’s role as director or pastor. However, we will be communicating with all current clients of the counseling center, as well as anyone who has had a minor in counseling for the past 4 years, to make them aware of the charges, as well as provide a number to reach law enforcement should anyone have additional information or complaints. I want to thank Laurie Goetze for agreeing to step in as our Interim/Acting Director. She is a gifted clinician and will give solid leadership to the Center.
I would guess that many are questioning the teachings or counsel that Jack has given over the years. I would simply say that the Lord is truth and He has communicated His love and truth through some very flawed and even failed people. However, that doesn’t change His Love, His Pursuit and His Truth. I would encourage you to cling to Him in these days. That will be our desire as a church leadership and family. Please pray for those who have been impacted. Please pray for the Body of Christ in our community as well as our community as a whole. Pray for our counselors at the Center, as they hold the trust that has been given them and the ministry of healing seriously. And certainly, please pray for Colonial Woods, that as we walk through these days we will be a strong testimony to the grace and light of Jesus Christ.
Praying the Lord’s Peace,
